About
We're currently looking for participants for an auditory experiment at Newcastle University Medical School. This study aims to investigate predictors of real-life listening ability or speech-in-noise perception. Many people struggle with conversations in noisy environments even with normal hearing sensitivity. We want to investigate why this is the case, using tests of peripheral hearing, working memory, sound segregation, pattern discrimination, etc.
Eligible participants will be given a hearing test, several computer tasks, and paper tests in the lab on two separate days. You can also choose to come to one session only. You will receive a copy of your hearing test upon finishing, where we measure your hearing threshold at different frequencies as it would be done at an audiology clinic.
Session A looks for English native speakers (born in the UK) aged 25-70. Participants should have no history of auditory, language, or mental disorders. Your hearing ability, working memory, general intelligence, reading ability, as well as musicality will be measured during a 2-hour session.
Session B looks for English native speakers (born in the UK) aged over 18. Participants should have no history of auditory, language, or mental disorders. Your hearing ability, auditory pattern discrimination ability, and musicality will be measured during a 1.5-hour session.
If you are only eligible for one session, you can just attend that session. You are also free to choose whichever session you prefer to attend if you are eligible for both.
Tea or coffee will be served upon request.
